Deep Dive 1 — The Physics of a Phone That Folds to 4.1 Millimetres

At Galaxy Unpacked in London on July 22, Samsung introduced three new foldables: the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, the Galaxy Z Fold8 and the Galaxy Z Flip8. The headline device, the Z Fold8 Ultra, is the first foldable to carry Samsung's "Ultra" badge. Unfolded, it presents an 8-inch main display while measuring just 4.1 millimetres thick and weighing 215 grams — the thinnest Galaxy Z Fold yet. Its sibling, the Z Fold8, was redesigned around new display proportions: a 5.5-inch cover screen and a 7.6-inch main display that opens to a 4:3 aspect ratio, with a 4,800 mAh battery rated for more than 26 hours of video playback at only 201 grams. The clamshell Z Flip8 measures 6.1 mm unfolded and weighs 180 grams, with a more capable FlexWindow cover display that now runs full apps without unfolding the phone.
How do you fold glass?
The science here is worth pausing on, because "folding glass" sounds like a contradiction. A modern foldable display is a laminated sandwich, from bottom to top: a support plate (often carbon fibre or, increasingly, titanium alloy), the flexible OLED emitting layer deposited on a polyimide substrate, a layer of ultra-thin glass (UTG) measuring roughly 30 to 50 micrometres — about half the thickness of a human hair — and finally a protective polymer film. Glass at that thickness stops behaving like the rigid sheet in your window and starts behaving like paper: the thinner a material is, the lower the strain on its surface when bent to a given radius. Strain is what cracks glass, and strain scales with thickness divided by bending radius. Halve the thickness and you can halve the fold radius before the material fails.
The second trick is the neutral plane. When you bend any laminated stack, the outer surface stretches (tension) and the inner surface squeezes (compression); somewhere in the middle is a plane that does neither. Display engineers position the most fragile layer — the OLED's thin-film transistors — as close to that neutral plane as possible, using adhesive layers of precisely tuned stiffness to shift it. Samsung's "Flex Titanium" approach, used across the new generation, adds a titanium lattice support under the screen: titanium's high stiffness-to-weight ratio spreads folding stress evenly, which both improves durability and reduces the visibility of the crease, the local deformation where the panel's layers have been repeatedly cycled.
The hinge does the rest. Rather than folding the screen flat like a book spine — which would demand a near-zero bend radius and destroy the panel — modern hinges guide the display into a teardrop-shaped loop hidden inside the chassis. The panel never bends tighter than its safe radius, and the two halves can still close flush, which is how Samsung reached 4.1 mm per side without gaps. Samsung says the folding magnets, hinge mechanism and display tension were re-optimized together this generation; that co-engineering, more than any single component, is why an 8-inch tablet can now live in a jacket pocket.
The silicon and the software
Inside the Fold8 Ultra sits Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy alongside a 5,000 mAh battery, and reports from GSMArena indicate the Z Flip8 pairs the Snapdragon in North America with Samsung's Exynos 2600 in some other regions. The extra compute is being spent on what Samsung calls agentic AI: features like Now Nudge, which anticipates when you need a second app and opens it in Multi Window, and Gemini Notebook, which turns meeting recordings into summaries, slides or podcasts on-device and in the cloud. The big foldable screen is the point: multitasking AI is only useful when there is room to see two or three things at once.

Deep Dive 2 — Tandem OLED vs. Micro RGB: The New Display Wars

Two display technologies took real steps out of the lab and into stores this season. LG Display rebranded its entire OLED lineup around the word "tandem" — Tandem WOLED for TVs and monitors, Tandem OLED for laptops and tablets — and its 2026 flagship panels with "Primary RGB Tandem 2.0" technology are reported by FlatpanelsHD and Tom's Guide to target brightness in the region of 4,500 nits with reduced reflectance. Meanwhile Samsung's first "micro RGB" televisions, LCD sets backlit by a dense grid of microscopic red, green and blue LEDs, moved from CES demo to wide retail availability in June. Both camps are chasing the same prize: a brighter, longer-lasting, more colorful picture.
Why stacking OLEDs works
An OLED pixel is an organic sandwich: when current flows between electrodes, electrons and "holes" (positive charge carriers) meet in an emissive organic layer and release their recombination energy as light. The catch is degradation — organic molecules wear out, and they wear out faster the harder you drive them. Brightness in an OLED is roughly proportional to current density, but lifetime falls off much faster than linearly as current rises. That asymmetry is the key to the tandem idea: stack two (or more) complete emission layers vertically in the same pixel, connected in series by a transparent charge-generation layer. Each layer now needs only half the current to produce the same total light, and because lifetime degrades super-linearly with current, halving the drive current more than doubles the panel's usable life. The same architecture can instead be spent on brightness: drive both layers moderately hard and you get peak luminance figures — 4,000-plus nits — that single-layer OLED simply cannot sustain without burning itself out. "Primary RGB Tandem" goes further by stacking independent red, green and blue emitting layers, improving color purity at high brightness. This is the technology LG Display shipped in premium 2025 TVs and is now extending across its 2026 lineup, including new 27-inch 4K and 39-inch 5K ultrawide monitor panels.
Micro RGB: LCD strikes back
LCD televisions create their picture in two stages: a backlight produces light, and a liquid-crystal layer with color filters shutters it pixel by pixel. Conventional sets use white or blue LEDs behind the panel, which means color depends entirely on the filters, and dark scenes suffer because the backlight is always partly on. Mini-LED improved contrast by shrinking the backlight into thousands of dimmable zones. Micro RGB — the approach Samsung has now brought to retail, and which Hisense, LG and Sony are also pursuing under names like "RGB mini-LED" — replaces the white LEDs with triads of microscopic red, green and blue emitters. The backlight itself can now produce colored light exactly where the scene needs it. The physics payoff is threefold: a wider color gamut, because narrow-band RGB emitters produce purer primaries than a filtered white source; higher color brightness, because less light is thrown away in the filters; and better blooming control, because a zone behind a red object emits only red. Crucially, LCDs tolerate very high drive levels without organic degradation, so micro RGB sets can chase multi-thousand-nit HDR highlights with less concern about burn-in — historically OLED's Achilles heel, and exactly the weakness tandem stacking is designed to fix. Competition, in other words, is working from both directions.

Deep Dive 3 — 570 Fixes and a Phone Call: Anatomy of July's Security Storm

On July 14, Microsoft released its largest security update of the year: 570 vulnerabilities patched across Windows, Office and server products, 57 of them rated critical, according to analyses by CrowdStrike and the Zero Day Initiative. Two flaws were zero-days — vulnerabilities exploited by attackers before a fix existed. CVE-2026-56155 affects Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS), the component many organizations use to sign users into cloud services with their corporate credentials; CVE-2026-56164 affects SharePoint Server, the document-collaboration platform. A third flaw in Windows BitLocker, CVE-2026-50661, was publicly disclosed the same week, though exploitation has not been confirmed. Separately, F5 patched a critical heap buffer overflow in the nginx web server, and a vulnerability in the popular 7-Zip archiver was found to allow code execution simply by opening a crafted XZ archive.
Why identity systems are the crown jewels
The science of these attacks is really the science of trust. AD FS is a federation service: it vouches for your identity to other systems by issuing cryptographically signed tokens. Every downstream application — email, file storage, HR systems — accepts those tokens the way a border agent accepts a passport. Compromise the passport office and you no longer need to forge anything; you can print genuine passports with any name you like. That is why a single AD FS flaw is rated so severely, and why attackers invested in exploiting it before a patch existed: identity infrastructure converts one intrusion into unlimited, legitimate-looking access. SharePoint is attractive for a related reason — it is where organizations concentrate their documents, so one server yields the contents of a thousand filing cabinets.
A "zero-day" simply means defenders had zero days of warning: the exploit was in use before the vendor knew. Once a patch ships, the race inverts — attackers reverse-engineer the fix to find the hole, then hunt for organizations that have not yet applied it. Studies consistently show mass exploitation peaks in the days and weeks after a patch is released, not before. The practical lesson is unglamorous but powerful: prompt, automatic updating is the single highest-value security behavior available to any home user or business.
The human vulnerability has no CVE number
The month's most damaging breaches did not use a zero-day at all. The ShinyHunters group gained access to healthcare giant Abbott through a voice-phishing (vishing) campaign — attackers phoned employees, posed as internal IT support, and talked victims into handing over credentials or approving login prompts. The Anubis ransomware group listed dairy producer Fairlife on its leak site days after the parent company disclosed a breach. And in the software world, the "SleeperGem" campaign planted malicious packages in the RubyGems repository, so that developers installing a seemingly legitimate library also installed a hidden payload. The common thread is that all three attacks exploit trust rather than code: trust in a caller's voice, in a supplier, in an open-source package name. Defense therefore has to be layered — phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication (hardware keys rather than approval prompts, which vishing can talk you through), verified call-back procedures for any request involving credentials, dependency scanning in software projects, and tested offline backups so ransomware loses its leverage.
