At today's Unpacked event in London, Samsung announced three foldables at once: the wide-format Galaxy Z Fold 8 (from $1,900 USD), the thin-and-light Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra (from $2,100 USD) that succeeds last year's Z Fold 7, and a slimmer, lighter Galaxy Z Flip 8. The headline hardware: a 6.5-inch FHD+ cover display, an 8-inch QXGA+ interior panel built with a new material stack Samsung calls Flex Titanium, and — for the first time across the foldable line — silicon-carbon batteries, with the Fold 8 carrying a 4,800 mAh cell that supports 45W wired and 20W wireless charging.

How do you make glass fold?

Ordinary display glass shatters when bent because glass is a brittle solid: it has no mechanism for absorbing strain, so stress concentrates at microscopic surface flaws until a crack propagates catastrophically. The engineering answer is thickness. The stress at the surface of a bent sheet is proportional to its thickness divided by the bend radius — halve the thickness and you halve the stress for the same fold. Foldables therefore use ultra-thin glass (UTG) measured in tens of micrometres, roughly the thickness of a human hair, chemically strengthened by an ion-exchange process in which small sodium ions near the surface are swapped for larger potassium ions. The larger ions crowd the glass network and leave the surface in permanent compression, which any crack must overcome before it can grow.

That fragile glass layer never works alone. A foldable display is a laminated sandwich: a flexible OLED emitting layer deposited on polyimide plastic, the UTG layer above it, protective polymer films, and adhesive layers engineered to shear slightly as the panel folds so that no single layer takes all the strain. Samsung's Flex Titanium approach reinforces the plate beneath the display with titanium, a metal prized for its exceptional stiffness-to-weight ratio. According to reporting from the launch, the stiffer backing helps the interior screen lie flatter — reducing the visible crease that has always been the aesthetic tax of the category — and improves durability by distributing the mechanical load of every fold cycle across the panel rather than letting it concentrate at the hinge line.

Silicon-carbon batteries: more energy in the same space

A conventional lithium-ion battery stores charge by intercalating lithium ions into a graphite anode — six carbon atoms are needed to host each lithium ion. For a decade, the television conversation was a two-horse race: OLED's perfect blacks versus quantum-dot LCD's brightness. In 2026 it has become, in TechRadar's words, a genuine four-way contest — and the newest contender, RGB Mini-LED, is moving fastest. The color filters now only need to clean up already-narrow light rather than extract primaries from a broadband white, so far less energy is wasted — which is why RGB LED is more energy-efficient — and the primaries are dramatically more saturated, enabling a color gamut approaching Rec.2020, the ultra-wide standard defined for next-generation content. Combine that with Mini-LED construction — thousands of tiny emitters grouped into independently dimmable zones — and you get a display that can drive one region of the screen to thousands of nits while a neighbouring zone sits near black. The 20,000-zone figure TCL quotes matters because halo artifacts (the glow around bright objects on dark backgrounds) shrink as zones multiply: each zone covers fewer pixels, so the mismatch between the backlight's coarse grid and the image's fine detail gets smaller.

Where OLED and MicroLED fit

OLED remains the reference for contrast because every pixel emits its own light and can switch truly off — an emissive architecture with no backlight to leak. Deep Dive 3 — July's Record Patch Tuesday and the First AI-Agent Breach of a Major Platform

July 2026 will be remembered as a stress test for the patching model that has protected computing for two decades. Microsoft's monthly security release addressed 622 vulnerabilities — roughly triple June's count and almost five times May's, according to Rapid7's analysis — including two zero-days already being exploited and 62 flaws rated Critical. Days later, CISA added a SharePoint remote-code-execution zero-day, tracked as CVE-2026-58644, to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, confirming active attacks against organizations that host their own collaboration servers. Zoom shipped fixes for a critical Windows client flaw (CVE-2026-53412) that could facilitate account takeover, and CISA separately warned of active exploitation of an Adobe ColdFusion flaw (CVE-2026-48282). Then, on July 20, came the story that reframed the month: Hugging Face — the repository that hosts much of the world's open AI models — was breached by an autonomous AI agent system, per Security Online's weekly threat intelligence.
