Clone, Don't Reinstall: Move Windows to a 2TB NVMe SSD and Securely Wipe Your Old Drive
Keep everything — your apps, files, settings, even your desktop wallpaper — and move it all to a faster, bigger drive using only the tools already built into Windows 11. Then erase the old one properly so it's safe to sell or reuse.
Reinstalling Windows from scratch is clean, but let's be honest: reinstalling every app, hunting down license keys, and reconfiguring everything takes a full day. There's a better way — and you don't need to download a single third-party program. Windows 11 ships with everything required: a system image tool that captures your entire Windows exactly as it is, a recovery drive tool to restore that image onto the new V-NAND 1080 Pro-Grade 2TB M.2 NVMe SSD, and built-in secure-erase options for the old drive so it can be sold, given away, or reused with zero risk to your personal data.

2Create the Windows Recovery Drive
- Plug in the USB stick (16 GB+).
- Press Start, type "Create a recovery drive" and open it (this is Windows' own tool).
- Leave "Back up system files to the recovery drive" checked, select your USB stick, and let it build (15–30 minutes).
This stick is what you'll boot from to restore your Windows onto the new SSD — and it doubles as a permanent repair tool worth keeping in a drawer.
3Create the System Image
The system image is your "clone": an exact copy of Windows, applications, settings and files, captured by Windows itself.
- Connect the external drive.
- Press Start, type "Control Panel", open it, then go to System and Security → Backup and Restore (Windows 7) — don't mind the name, it's fully supported in Windows 11.
- In the left column, click "Create a system image".
- Choose "On a hard disk" and select your external drive.
- Confirm the drives to include (your Windows drive and its hidden system partitions are pre-selected) and click Start backup.
- Wait — typically 30–90 minutes depending on how much data you have. When offered to create a system repair disc, decline: your recovery USB from Step 2 already covers it.
4Install the New SSD
- Shut down completely, unplug the power, and press the power button once to drain residual power.
- Touch bare metal on the case to discharge static.
- Replacing the old drive? Remove it and install the new SSD in its M.2 slot at a ~30° angle, press flat, secure the screw. (Keeping the old drive out during restore is the safest option — it also preserves it as an untouched safety net.)
- Keeping both drives installed? Install the new SSD in the free M.2 slot — just be extra careful to pick the right target drive in the next step.
5Restore Your Windows Onto the New SSD
- Plug in the recovery USB stick and the external drive holding the image.
- Power on and boot from the USB stick (boot menu: F12/F11/Esc, pick the UEFI entry).
- Choose your keyboard layout, then Troubleshoot → Advanced options → System Image Recovery.
- Windows finds the latest image on the external drive automatically — confirm it.
- On the next screen, if the old drive is still installed, click "Exclude disks" and exclude it — the restore completely overwrites its target, and you only want the new 2TB SSD rewritten.
- Confirm and let Windows restore (30–90 minutes). The PC reboots into your Windows — same apps, same files, same wallpaper — now running from the new SSD.
6Reclaim the Full 2 TB
Your image was the size of the old drive, so a chunk of the new SSD may sit unused. Claim it with Windows' own disk manager:
- Right-click Start → Disk Management.
- Find the unallocated space after your C: partition, right-click C: → Extend Volume → Next → Finish.
- Check Settings → System → Activation: Windows normally stays activated, since it's the same PC.
- Use the PC normally for a few days with the old drive untouched — it's your free safety net before the final step.
7Wipe the Old Drive — Properly
Once you're confident the new SSD runs perfectly, it's time to erase the old drive. A simple format is not enough — formatted files can be recovered. Windows 11 has the right tool for each scenario:
Scenario A — the old drive stays in your PC as extra storage
- Right-click Start → Disk Management → delete all partitions on the old drive → create a new volume.
- You now have a clean second drive for backups, media or games. (Since it stays with you, deep erasure is optional.)
Scenario B — you're selling or giving away the old drive (or the whole PC)
- For a whole PC: use Windows' built-in reset — Settings → System → Recovery → Reset this PC → Remove everything, and crucially choose "Clean data" (fully clean the drive). This overwrites your data, not just deletes it.
- For a bare drive: connect it, open Terminal (Admin) (right-click Start) and run diskpart → list disk → select disk X (triple-check the number by size!) → clean all. This overwrites every sector — it can take a few hours and is exactly what you want before selling.
- If the old drive was BitLocker-encrypted, you're in even better shape: cleaning it and discarding the key renders the data unreadable.
Enjoy the Upgrade
- Same Windows, same apps, same everything — on a drive that's faster and several times bigger.
- Zero third-party software installed, zero licenses bought — every tool used came with Windows 11.
- The old drive becomes clean extra storage or safe cash from a private sale; the recovery USB stays in your drawer as a repair tool; and the system image on the external drive is a bonus full backup.
- Leave ~10% of the new drive free, let Windows handle TRIM automatically, and never defragment an SSD.
Quick Troubleshooting
- PC boots the old Windows instead of the new SSD: enter the BIOS (Del/F2) and put the new SSD's "Windows Boot Manager" first in the boot order.
- System Image Recovery can't find the image: make sure the external drive is plugged directly into the PC (not through a hub), then use "Select a system image" to browse to it.
- Restore refuses the target disk: if the old drive is still installed, use "Exclude disks" to rule it out; the 2 TB target is larger than the original, so size is never the problem.
- New SSD not visible: check the M.2 slot supports NVMe and the drive is seated firmly at 30° before screwing down.
- Windows deactivated after the swap: Settings → System → Activation → Troubleshoot → "I changed hardware on this device recently", signed in with your Microsoft account.
